A.P. Hill Elementary School has been renamed "Cool Spring Elementary".
In 2018 the Petersburg City Public School district moved decisively towards unity by renaming three of their schools that bore the names of Confederate operatives. As an example, A.P. Hill's namesake was General Ambrose Powell Hill who was the was a pivotal figure in arguably the bloodiest battle of the Civil War at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. After his education at West Point he abandoned the United States military for a command post with the seditious Confederate Army. Gettysburg was a battle so vicious that remains of soldiers were still being found at the site as late as 1996.
