Pineville High School which has regularly been one of the highest rated public schools in Rapides Parish, is home to the "Pineville High Rebels," as well as their mascot: The Rebel General. The mascot (which is a carbon copy of the Ole Miss mascot, which the school removed officially in 2003) portrays a Confederate soldier, which along with the schools fight song, "Are you from Dixie," is an overt homage to the racist and oppressive beliefs of the pre-Civil War South and should have no place in today's society in general and in an educational institution in specific.
“Jeff Powell, RPSB superintendent, said the decision to change the mascot is an issue for the schools to decide.”
"I believe Pineville High school will be open to it being changed," said the alum. "And I’m sure the students would love for it to be changed as well. As long as we don’t end up getting bogged down in bureaucracy and potential 'public backlash' by people who just don’t want change - I think we can change it."
