In February 2014, the School's mascot was changed from the Apaches to Redhawks. This was due to the controversy revolving around the use of the name of a Native American tribe as a mascot.
No one spoke against the new mascot at the meeting. Kim DeOcampo, a graduate of the now closed Hogan High School, recounted a memory in which the Spartans were prepping for a game against Vallejo High.
“I witnessed someone at my school holding up a sign saying, ”Scalp the Apaches.” And even though I”m not from this tribe, it still hurt me as a native person. My own school insulted my heritage,” DeOcampo said, adding that she appreciated the work of the school board to “right centuries of wrong.”
