Braintree High School's mascot is the letter "B". Athletic teams from the school use the nickname "The Wamps." The name is derived from the Massachusetts Indian Chief known as Wampatuck, who ceded land to colonists through the "Braintree Indian Deed" in 1665.
"Every year, students dress up in feathered costumes and face paint, running through the halls replicating 'Native American chants,'" the petition reads. "These racist practices are unacceptable yet continue to be allowed and encouraged by the use of this mascot."
